Avoid wastage of seats in M.tech programme in IITs

Avoid wastage of seats in M.tech programme in IITs
The Issue
Admissions into IITs for the M.Tech programme (for CSE) are done on the basis of GATE score. Most of the IITs generally admit students directly, while some of them also conduct interviews.
Some IITs schedule their counselling in a manner that 100% seats are filled. However, some IITs - Kanpur, Delhi, Hyderabad - in 2015, didn't have any waiting lists/spot rounds or they were conducted earlier compared to other preferred IITs. This led to wastage of many seats and hampered the careers of many capable candidates.
For instance, here are some of the seat filling details of 2015:
- IIT-K filled only 38 seats. (In 2012 they had 71 students). They did not have a waiting list after interview and many people left and joined IIT-B/IISc in later rounds.
- IIT-D filled 40 out of around 50 seats. They had a waiting list, but most people from the waiting list had already joined other IITs. (Needed a larger waiting list and calling from it near August)
- IIT-H filled 16 out of 20 seats as their last round happened much before that of other top IITs.
At present, IIT M.Tech. seats are less (around 500 and more than 100,000 students writing GATE), and IITs should make sure that at least those get completely filled.
Some IITs have started doing spot rounds since last year, resulting in filling of 100% seats. IIT Guwahati admitted 6 students in the GN.category in the 4th list that was announced on 4th August 2015 (ref. IITG Round 4). There were many candidates who were admitted to IITKgp in spot round too.
One possible solution is to introduce spot rounds and waiting lists. A suggested ordering of the spot rounds/waiting lists is as follows:
IIT-B round 4: June 22 (declared)
IISc spot round : June 25 (suggested)
IIT-K final call from waiting list: July 11 (suggested)
IIT-D final call from waiting list : July 15 (suggested)
IIT-Kgp spot round : July 22 (suggested)
IIT-M spot round : July 26 (declared)
IIT-G spot round : July 28 (suggested)
IIT-H spot round: July 30 (suggested)
IIT-R spot round: August 2 (suggested)
If spot rounds and waiting lists are introduced for GATE-2016 admissions, then many capable students can get admission into these premier institutes of our country that can create great quality engineers and researchers which will certainly improve the current scenario of our country
I appeal to all the GATE as well non-GATE aspirants to sign this petition to request MHRD and the concerned authorities of IITs to introduce spot rounds and waiting lists for the M.Tech admissions to fill 100% seats.
