I heard a newsman read a disturbing story recently. It was the story of one of BC's most amazing wildlife creatures, a black bear. Now, when a bear kills a human or is aggressive, the bear is shot to protect people from further danger...but in many cases (most), the bear is snooping around for garbage and has no interest in attacking a human, unless the human is seen as a threat to either it's offspring or it's food source.

A bear wandered into West Vancouver and started poking around for food in a residents garage in late June. Conservation officers were called in to transport the bear away from the neighbourhood, but when they arrived on the scene, he was shot and "destroyed" instead. When a bear is not aggressive, and not attacking humans for prey, under NO circumstances should the animal be shot and killed, when it could have been relocated and transported effectively. Conservation officers will say it was for public safety, but in all reality, this bear should have been relocated, and not shot on site, due to the fact that it was merely seeking out a mans freezer, stocked full of food.

Stop allowing convenience to replace compassion, and help protect these beautiful creatures. A bear searching for food (not humans) should not be punished and given a sentence of death for surviving. 

Keep British Columbia beautiful and conserve the wildlife when able, rather than destroy. Be a leading example in global wildlife protection and treat a non-aggressive bear with respect and fairness.

We understand that sometimes good conservation officers will not shoot even an aggressive bear, if it is a mother defending her cubs for instance. But proper judgement needs to be used in all situations, and the bottom line is this: no bear that has not attacked or killed a human being should be shot. A wandering bear in a residential neighbourhood should ALWAYS be relocated.
