I am near the Bongaigaon refinery since a few days. This refinery is situated in Assam, northeastern part of India. Since the day I have arrived here, I have been witnessing a very obnoxious smell. The smell has been so obnoxious that I am facing difficuly to even breath. The population residing in the villages situated in the vicinity of the refinery are suffering from this persisting violence for years. As I enquired , I have found that many people in these village have died an early death , while many others suffering from lung problems, and many other life threatening diseases. One of the local activist filed a RTI in the refinery questioning the unabated pollution , but the refinery has replied with a blatant lie that it doesn't produce any obnoxious smell. On meeting with the local population, they have regretted that they can't take any action against the refinery machinery as it is a very powerful industry , and the government officials are not likely to take any action against the industry. In the face of such a scenario, what can be done? Can something be done to stop this life threatening pollution? Do these people have right to breath pure air?
