Urgent Extradition Treaty Required between South Africa and Mozambique
Urgent Extradition Treaty Required between South Africa and Mozambique
The Issue
While over 350 rhino have been poached in South Africa's famous Kruger National Park in 2014 alone, and thousands more over the last few years, poachers and syndicate kingpins operating from neighbouring Mozambique sleep easily, and flaunt their new-found wealth by day, safe in the knowledge that there is no Criminal Extradition Treaty between the two countries that could see them facing justice in SA courts.
While Mozambique law enforcement is slowly attempting to tackle this massive cottage industry, hampered by corruption and outdated laws and feeble fines, the perpetrators know that once they have returned to their Mozambiquan strongholds, where they are revered as "entrepeneurs", they are safe.
The lack of inter-departmental judicial cooperation has been acknowledged as a major stumbling block by enforcement officers on both sides of the fence, and seems illogical, as South Africa has extradition treaties with many countries, including some of their other neighbours.
To the new Minister of Justice, Mike Masutha, and his colleagues in the Department of Foreign Relations:
Please! This treaty will make a massive contribution to the prosecution of foreigners who invade our land and take what is ours, not theirs!
