Stop discriminating PhD students and support research at NIT Trichy
The Issue
NIT Trichy is a very good institute. However, the approach of the management towards research and PhD candidates is very poor in the last 5 years.
[1] There are many labs without basic computing facilities necessary for research work. The best example is our Text Analytics and NLP lab from Department of Computer Applications. Neither the institute people nor the faculty are bothered. Without quality papers, how can a PhD candidate can have a bright future after PhD?
[2] A PhD candidate is promoted to SRF from JRF after second year based on satisfactory progress in the first two years. Here satisfactory progress means finishing course work with satisfactory grades, clearing PhD qualifying exam, identifying problem statement and if possible, submit a paper. Satisfactory progress never includes publishing a paper as a mandatory criteria. But in NIT Trichy, unofficial rule is "to get promoted to SRF, a journal paper is mandatory". Acceptance of a journal paper sometimes takes more than a year also. What is the necessity of such unnecessary and unofficial rules which will put additional stress on PhD candidates?
[3] PhD candidates who are day scholars will never get HRA. Many institutes are providing HRA to day scholars.
[4] PhD candidates will never get stipend on time. There are many instances where the scholars have to wait till 22nd of a month to get the stipend. There is no proper date on which stipend gets credited.
[5] Contingency fund (23K per year) is given to scholars to attend workshops, conferences and manage other research related expenses. This fund is suddenly stopped without any official circular.
All these things will result in huge stress on PhD candidates. Research itself involves lot of stress as not everything goes as planned. Why PhD candidates at NIT Trichy have to go through unnecessary stress because of all these things? Being an institute of national importance, NIT Trichy management has to give utmost importance to research. In many of the interviews, Bharat Ratna CNR Rao one of the greatest scientists from INDIA emphasized the need to promote research. It is very unfortunate to see lot of discrimination towards PhD candidates at NIT Trichy. Hopefully, these things will change at least in future so that future PhD candidates at NIT Trichy will get benefited.
