Replace Banting Memorial High School

Banting Memorial High School (BMHS) in Alliston was denied replacement capital funding for the 6th time in October 2020, despite being the top priority of the Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB).

The school is in critical condition while supporting a rapidly growing student population. The aging systems are a ticking time bomb, caked in asbestos. Built in 1949, our school is 71 years old and the facility is beyond repair. Replacement is long over due, and our community cannot be denied again.

We need Premier Doug Ford and Education Minister Stephen Lecce to immediately approve funding to replace BMHS as a part of a community hub as proposed in the 2019 business case submitted by the SCDSB.

The Town of New Tecumseth is experiencing rapid population growth. Our elementary schools are bursting at the seems, while our high school is literally falling apart. We are at the cusp of a crisis as the number of our students entering high school grows larger each year.

The failing facility is already stretched beyond its limits and will be strained further until disaster strikes, unless we act now. The fastest we can build a high school is 3 years, I worry that Banting won’t even last that long. Therefore, it is imperative that we act now to secure the capital funding need to replace BMHS now!

The next round of capital funding announcement will be made in the spring of 2021. We cannot allow BMHS to be bypassed again. Everyone needs to not only sign this petition, but make sure your friends and family sign it too. Then write, call, and make noise, the government needs to hear from as many people as possible that our kids need Banting Memorial High School replaced ASAP!
