Open up Dunsoghly Castle, near St. Margaret's to the public

The Issue

Dunsoghly Castle is a 15th century Towerhouse in North County Dublin only 14 kms from O'Connell St. It was the seat of the Plunketts of Dunsoghly for over 400 years.  Prior to 1995, when the film Braveheart was shot on site at Dunsoghly Castle, one could access the entire site through a local keyholder but after the film crews had left the castle access was denied and since then there has been no public access without prior permission from the land owner and the OPW / National Monuments Service, requiring signed indemnity against claims etc. This is simply wrong!

The Castle is a National Monument in the ownership of the citizens of this State since 1914, that's over 106 years and yet we cannot get in to see and appreciate this gem on our doorsteps, that we actually own!

The Castle structure has been conserved and repaired over the years and is in relatively good condition for its age. Its over 600 years old and still has much of its original trussed oak roof timbers, the only castle in Ireland to have such a treasure.

Since 2009, discussions have taken place between the interested parties, including a complete development plan and proposals but unfortunately these have come to nothing. Now in 2020, I hope this Castle's time has come and with your support I am confident I can progress this issue.

It has been part of the North Dublin / South Fingal landscape through so many epic periods of local history and was even bombarded by Cromwellian forces in the 1650s. Please share and sign this petition and I will pursue this issue with the relevant authorities relentlessly.
