Investigation into Cause of Deadly Neurological Syndrome in New Brunswick Must Begin Now

The Issue

Dozens of people in New Brunswick are demonstrating signs of a neurological syndrome of unknown cause. Nine people have died.

In June 2019 my father, Roger Ellis was 61 and enjoying retirement. It all came to a crashing halt when he collapsed at home with a seizure. In the weeks and months that followed, he suffered from hallucinations, severe weight loss, cognitive decline, loss of the ability to eat, mobility issues, memory problems, aggression and repetitive speech. At his lowest, the hospital asked us to think about his end-of-life plans. Every single test done was negative and common diagnoses like dementia and Alzheimer’s were ruled out.

As of January 2022, he lives in a special care home. The family home was sold. The recreational vehicles and trailers he enjoyed during retirement are no more. His brain continues to die a little bit more every day and we still don’t know why.

The government of NB has refused any further assistance from the federal scientists who are willing to help and do the necessary environmental testing.

People in New Brunswick were told that a formal investigation into this unknown deadly neurological syndrome was underway with the support of the Public Health Agency of Canada, which has the federal and international expertise to conduct a scientific investigation into the cause.

But in reality - no investigation into cause has occurred.

No soil, water or food samples have been taken or sent for testing.  Federal scientists and experts from the Public Health Agency of Canada were asked to stop working on the investigation in May of 2021.

“Federal scientists would like to test brain tissue from eight people within the cluster who have died for potential environmental toxins. But the province has refused permission for such studies.” – The Guardian November 16th 2021

We have to find answers as the number of suspected cases continues to rise.

We need your help. Our family members are dying and we want to ensure that other people aren't at risk of getting sick.

We are asking that the Government of New Brunswick Immediately:

  • Designate the Public Health Agency of Canada to co-lead the investigation with the full support of the province of New Brunswick.
  • Appoint a patient representative/ombudsman to the investigative team to ensure transparency for the families.
  • Issue a complete mission & mandate as to how the investigation will be conducted which includes a list of all soil, water, food and any other environmental testing that will be conducted.

» – The Guardian, le 16 novembre 2021
