On Saturday 24th August 2019 the Ramu Nickel Mine discharged chemicals into our ocean which as a direct impact as killed thousands of fish which is the main source of food and income for the surrounding communities. The people have since been ordered by the Government to not fish and swim in the ocean. The Government must now shut the mine down. The mine stated, it was not their intention to discharge the polluting waste so that clearly shows the mining company cannot assure this will not happen again.
