Justice for Ms. Ijeoma Ukenta

Justice for Ms. Ijeoma Ukenta
The Issue
Overview:
I made this petition to make sure that White people who assault or harass a Black or African American person, then call the police with false information on that person, are held accountable! In addition, we are calling for police accountability, budgetary oversight, and potential defunding of the Millburn Township Police Department. These issues have a legacy of affecting Black and African American people and we need change now! Please sign and share with others!
Details:
Like many, I was appalled and disgusted as I watched the video of Abigail Elphick assault/attempt to assault Ms. Ijeoma Ukenta, then attempt to frame the assault on Ms. Ukenta, continue to harass her, then subsequently as Abigail Elphick called the police on Ms. Ukenta, and finally as the police sided with Abigail Elphick. Not only did Ms. Ukenta maintain composure in situation that many Black, African American, and People of Color rightly fear, she further experienced injustice when the Millburn Township Police Department treated her disrespectfully when she filed a complaint against the police officers who answered the call.
I started this petition not to speak for Ms. Ijeoma Ukenta, but to further amplify the injustice she experienced and the blatant systemic racism in/from the Millburn Township Police department. It's past time to end the power of White tears.
Petition demands:
1.) An investigation needs to immediately be opened by the Millburn Township Police Department Police Chief Brian Gilfedder concerning the assault/attempted assault on and harassment of Ms. Ukenta by Abigail Elphick.
2.) An apology from the Millburn Township Police Department Police Chief Brian Gilfedder to Ms. Ijeoma Ukenta in the method of her choosing via press conference, written letter, etc.
3.) Policy changes need to be made within the Millburn Township Police department, which reflect an understanding of systemic racism, how that effects policing in communities, and includes retraining of police officers, and/or firing of police officers who demonstrate racist beliefs or attitudes.
4.) An internal investigation into the police officers involved that includes Millburn Township Mayor Tara B Prupis, with a subsequent report that is released to the public which details the changes that are being implemented within the Millburn police department.
5.) An audit of the Millburn Township's budget which analyzes police funding and spending, with the aim of defunding or lowering the Millburn police department's budget.
6.) Policy changes which enact mandatory fines and/or criminal action against fake assault claims, harassment, and wrongful action: faking falling or erroneously faking as though they’re being attacked. (As suggested by Casey Beck; thank you Casey!)
On a final note, Ms. Ukenta's GoFundMe, which she used to collect donations for legal fees, was fully funded!
