We aim to install an artificial reef at Venice Pier to improve the safety and quality of both the surfing and fishing recreation in the area. Ultimately, the project seeks to re-establish Venice Beach as a world-class surfing destination and improve tourism. An annual surfing competition featuring local businesses will directly improve the local economy. Unlike the expensive skateboarding installation in 2009, the Venice Pier Artificial Surf-Reef Project aims to partner with UCLA and Surfrider Foundation volunteers to build the new reef from recycled materials.
