Postgraduate education for nurses working in obstetrics/ maternity
Postgraduate education for nurses working in obstetrics/ maternity
The issue
Due to an aging midwifery population, low numbers of Midwifery degree uptake and numbers leaving the profession exceeding the numbers recruited, as well as a pervasive bullying culture, nurses are increasingly being required to work in maternity areas.
We want University's to develop postgraduate education pathways for nurses working in obstetrics, gynecology and maternity so that we can build a workforce of skilled, educated and experienced nurses.
This is immediately important to support patients to provide safe and accessible maternity care and to reduce maternal morbidity and mortality.
This will continue to be important until the midwifery workforce is able to come up with sustainable solution to end the midwifery shortage.
