Midterm Schedule

The Issue

We believe that students should not have to attend class in addition to midterms because allowing students to go home after testing during midterms can foster a more conducive learning environment. The intense preparation and study required for midterms often demand flexible schedules, enabling students to tailor their study routines to their individual needs. This flexibility can alleviate stress and enhance focus, promoting a deeper understanding of the material. Granting this autonomy during midterm periods recognizes the importance of self-directed learning and may ultimately contribute to improved academic performance. In addition to this, the original midterm schedule allowed students to have a break from the required testing that is now 5-10% of their semester grade as well as improve the mental well being of students who may feel overwhelmed with the increased course load. Finally, the original schedule allowed for teachers to have additional time to grade tests and promptly return them to students. The change in schedule reduces the amount of time that teachers now have to return the tests due to having to oversee classes instead of grading. Every other district in the surrounding area follows the original schedule, and they have not encountered known problems. While we can recognize that students may skip their testing, the weight of the test has been raised which will prompt students to come in, making the new schedule not necessary to ensure the success of students.
