A Halal Subway at Middlesex University

The Issue

Middlesex University has a diverse student body on campus with specific dietary requirements such as vegan, vegetarian, kosher and halal. There are a considerably high proportion of Muslim students at Middlesex University who have halal food dietary requirements.

The catering provided at Middlesex currently has limited provision of Halal & Kosher food on campus, resulting in many students having to travel off campus to eat. Other UK Universities with high proportions of Muslims students provide campus wide provision of halal food – both hot and savoury options. In 2013 the Students Union launched a campaign when the new Subway was opened, calling for it to serve Halal options, but the student voice was suppressed on this critical issue.

We as Middlesex students call on the University and the Students Union to:

  1. Lobby intensely the Middlesex catering provider (Chartwells) to apply for a Halal Subway franchise immediately, replacing the current non-halal one.
  2. We also call on them to increase their halal and kosher food offering across campus across campus
  3. Ensure the limited outlets that do serve halal food currently are clearly advertised.

The University Executive say their key value is “putting students first in everything they do” and that our university's “signature strength is our diversity”. So let’s start by putting the basic needs of our diverse student body first, by having the biggest food outlet on campus, serve halal meat.
