The Issue

Utilities are a necessity, not a luxury. In Michigan, the current privatized management of our gas and electric utilities has led to monopolistic practices that burden consumers with exorbitant rates. Companies like Consumers Energy and DTE Energy dominate the market, leaving no room for alternatives. With leadership collecting inflated salaries, these private entities continue to generate record profits at the expense of the people they serve. In fiscal 2025 alone, Consumers Energy reported a net profit of $1.06 billion, while DTE Energy boasted $1.462 billion.

Despite these staggering profits, consumers face relentless price hikes. How can it be justified that a company raking in over a billion in profits annually still demands more from the people relying on their services to survive? This is not just a financial issue; it impacts thousands of Michigan residents who struggle to keep their homes warm in winter or cool in summer.

By transitioning the management of Michigan's utility companies to a department within the State Government, we can ensure that public interest takes precedence over private profit. This structural change would introduce checks and balances essential for fair pricing and improved service. State management would prioritize reinvestment into infrastructure, focus on sustainable and green energy solutions, and maintain transparency and accountability, all of which are crucial for the well-being of Michigan residents.

It's time to fight for a system that represents the needs of the people rather than corporate shareholders. We need a utility framework where decisions are made based on community needs and economic justice.

Sign this petition to demand the Michigan State Government take responsibility and manage our utilities, ensuring an equitable and fair system for all citizens. Together, we can move towards a sustainable future and end the exploitation of our essential services.
