Make MSU Math 103 A Pass or Fail Course

Make MSU Math 103 A Pass or Fail Course
The Issue
This term, many students have been found struggling their way through Math 103 which is taught by Sue Allen and Sharon Griffen. ThIs course is focused on College Algebra, but many students have agreed it is focused more on memorization than learning. Students have rated both Sue Allen and Sharon Griffen very harsly on rate my professor, and other regular Michigan State University proctored rating systems. This course is taught through several lectures a week, which are followed by multiple harsh weekly in person quizes or exams. Students have agreed that the lectures have not provided them the information necessary to succeed within this course. They have also all agreed that the homework is very harsh, and quizzes and exams are impossible to ace or get a decent grade in due to harsh grading. Many students are failing due to the system. The system is failing the students, and they are left helpless and therefore, their GPA's are falling.
Exams within this course are worth 66 percent of each students grade. There are 3 non-cumulative midterms and one optional final exam. If students choose to take the final exam, they are allowed the drop their lowest midterm score. Most students have been recieving midterm scores in the low 60's due to the system, harsh grading, and not recieving the knowledge necessary to succees within the weekly lectures. Most students studied for weeks in order to raise their grade with the final exam. Many students continued to hold scores of 70 or below, with a good portion of the students failing. When the final exam scores recently came out, almost none of the students recieved above a 50 percent. The system is failing the students. We are failing the students by not attempting to make a change. We must stand up and show the school this is not on the students, but the faculty and math department at Michigan State. All students have had a hard time throughout this course, therefore we should award those who put in the extra effort. This petition is to change Math 103 to a credit or no credit course this semester. This would allow those who put in the extra effort to pass the course and not allow thier GPA's to stuffer. Most students did not recieve above a 70 percent, this does not represent our students correctly and they should not be punished in this case.
