STOP, THINK, REFLECT-  A RETURN TO SELF-DEFENSE LAW

We are a group of middle and high school students who want to stop people from taking advantage of the current “Stand Your Ground” laws that have led to unjustified killings of African-American/Black innocent people such as Trayvon Martin and Ahmaud Arbery. 

Our new law modifies current “Stand Your Ground” laws to the “Stop, Think & Reflect” law that states “a person who is not engaged in an unlawful activity and who is attacked physically in their home or other personal properties is allowed to protect themselves and should first utilize other resources such as calling the cops and/or giving warnings to stop crime/criminals before using deadly force and then finally, has the right to stand his or her ground and meet force with force, including deadly force, if he or she believes there’s no other option and it is necessary to do so to prevent death or great bodily harm to himself or herself or another or to prevent the commission of a forcible felony.”

This means, people are no longer allowed to shoot people:

Who are on their property and demonstrating no physical threat.
Without warning
In public areas
We recognize that this doesn’t solve the situations that arise outside the home and require self-defense. We believe that additional laws should be created that speak to those dangerous situations and both protect all parties involved. However, we know that the current “Stand Your Ground” laws are not being utilized to protect people. They are causing more harm than good.
