Stop Killing Dogs! Stop breed discrimination! Allow rescue groups and fosters to rescue and the general public to adopt all dogs!
The Issue
This is my and others experience with the MACS (Michigan Anti-Cruelty Society). This is Ledge's story and I want us all to create a change! Please, please, please sign and share this. I hope this is shared everywhere so people can find out what really goes on at MACS (Michigan Anti-cruelty Society); this also happens at DAC (Detroit Animal Control). I've been part, along with many others, of trying to save this poor dog from the jaws of the Michigan Anti-Cruelty Society. This story of Ledge, a young non-aggressive pit mix, who was found on 6/2/15, stranded on a slab of concrete above an overpass in Detroit near Outer Drive and I 96, hence he was named Ledge. There was a fence between him and any safe escape; his other route was a fall down onto the freeway below. From all appearances someone had placed him there to end his sad short life. A kind man, Robert Belcarz happened to come upon Ledge, as well a woman, named Mary, was also there. Robert secured a leash around Ledge’s neck for safety, and he then cut into the cyclone fencing freeing Ledge. He had posted this as it was happening on Last Day Dog Rescue FB page; people quickly rallied and offered help for Ledge. There was a rescue group along with a foster who stepped forward, but this was not to be in Ledges fate or his future. Robert had to leave and left Ledge with Mary, who said she would keep him safe in her backyard until the rescue showed up, but instead she turned him over to the Michigan Anti-Cruelty Society. When we all found out, there was great concern because they have a horrible reputation as being a high kill shelter for dogs that they deem aggressive e.g. Staffordshire Terriers, Pits/Pit mixes (and any dog that looks like one), Rottweilers, German Shepherds, Dobermans, Mastiffs and just any other type of dog they feel is disposable. They call themselves the Michigan Anti-Cruelty Society when the truth Is, the “Anti” should be removed and should be known as the Michigan Cruelty Society. They took Ledge and we tried everything to get him out, even offered to pay any vet bills or anything that we could do to buy his way out. Robert and others called daily during the 4 day hold which was up on Sat 6/6/15. I too, called every day to make sure he was safe; I was given excuses as he had to be checked by the vet, and he needed temperament testing; but they would always tell me he was OK. I reiterated to them each time, there was a rescue and a foster for him, money was available for him, and there were also people interested in adopting him. I told them every time I spoke with them he should never have ended up there and it was a huge mistake. I was told each time, my message would be given to the administrator of MACS and she would call me; that never happened. I was told we had to wait for his 4 day hold to be up before he could possibly be released, that never happened either. Well they were closed Sunday 6/7/15 and Monday 6/8/15, and when Robert called on Tuesday 6/9/15 he found that Ledge had been euthanized at the end of his hold on Saturday 6/6/15. We were told he was aggressive and they couldn’t get a leash on him; well Robert, who found Ledge had no trouble petting, leashing or walking him and Mary also had no problems with him; MACS said they had mixed up the animal control numbers and had been giving info on a different dog (lies). This was the same scenario some rescuers posted on FB before this even happened; they said these dogs never get to a rescue nor adopted out because they’ve been through this over and over again with MACS. I assume this is how MACS routinely covers up their killing at the shelter, just so they have some sort of excuse. These dogs don’t ever have a chance to live happily ever after. Our hearts broke when we heard Ledge had passed. We tried but things turned out just as many had predicted it would, with the same sad ending scenario with cover ups and lies. In the end there was nothing we could do to save Ledge, the dog that never should have been there in the first place. He had so many options but was never allowed to receive them. Because of their bureaucracy, Ledge died for no reason other than he was deemed an “aggressive” breed. No one will ever know how much he could love and how much someone could love him; this was all taken away by MACS and their inhumane treatment. Polices need changing now, and there needs to be transparency, no more cover ups. We need to be the voice for all the dogs, they need a chance and not a death sentence because of a breed they had no choice of being born into. BOTTOM LINE….. MICHIGAN ANTI-CRUELTY SOCIETY KILLS AND IT NEEDS TO STOP NOW! Please sign this petition with the hope to create a positive change at Michigan Anti-Cruelty Society, 13569 Joseph Campau St., Detroit, MI 48212, 313-891-7188 Check out their website for adoptable pets, you won’t find any of what they deem aggressive breeds, no German Shepherds, Rototillers, Dobermans, Pit/Pit mixes, etc. http://www.macsshelter.org/index.php?page=home.
