Every year over 100,000 horses are sent to slaughter every year. These animals are packed into trucks, with barely enough room to move, many have been starved, and abused. They are defenseless. They are sent on a long journey, that ends in their senseless, inhumane deaths.

After this journey, the already terrified horses are hung upside down, and shot with a captive bolt, and often several shots are required to render them unconscious. The horses neck is then slit, and it is sent down the production line, after the others it had seen screaming and flailing, before smelling their blood. And this is one of the less cruel slaughter scenarios. In some slaughter houses, horses are hung up, and stabbed through the spine, to paralyze them, and have their throats cut, while they are still awake, and aware of their surroundings, instead of using a captive bolt.

No animal deserves to go through this excruciating, terrifying experience. We have to call on our politicians to ban the export of equines for slaughter. And to act on this ban. Currently there are laws about how these animals are treated during transport, but in the majority of cases, these laws are not enforced, and therefore not followed.

It is up to us, the citizens of America, and throughout this world, to do everything we can to put a stop to this senseless mistreatment of animals. We have to be the voice for these amazing creatures, the majority of whom are sent to their deaths for no reason other than that they have grown too old, were injured, or are just not wanted anymore, but have never done anything to harm anyone. Or the worst case, horses who are adored by their owners, but are stolen, and sold to kill auctions for profit, while the owner searches and searches, unable to find their beloved companion. Many have given everything they have to their owners, only to be sent to auction, and then shipped out of the country to be killed inhumanely. Please help me to fight for these animals, call our government out on their decision to allow this cruelty.

Fight for those who can’t fight for themselves. Force our government to see the cruelty they allow, especially now, when the government has made animal cruelty a federal offense, they are still blind to the fact that they are actively enabling cruelty to these horses.

(the photo is of me and a horse I was able to save at auction before he could be sent for slaughter. He was sent to the kill auction Because he committed a crime in his owners eyes. The crime of growing old. He was 32 years old. He was malnourished, and depressed when I met him.  This horse lived 3 more glorious years, and brought joy to many people’s lives. He would put up with anything, I would ride bareback and bridleless, I would stand up on him, try to jump onto him from the ground, and he took it all with a light in his eye, doing anything to make me happy. I eventually let the lesson program at the farm where I boarded him use him in their program, and he was an instant favorite. He taught kids to canter, and jump, and was a best friend to an elderly woman with emphysema, who rode him, groomed him for hours, spoiled him with treats, and always made sure he was being treated like a king. I am sharing this story to show that many of the horses sent to slaughter, are good horses. He even showed a little bit, winning hunter undersaddle classes. He was a gentleman, that could always make you laugh when you were down, give you confidence if you were nervous, and would do ANYTHING to please you. Much like the majority of other horses who are sent to an auction to be sold for slaughter.)
