The Issue
We all know the story of why Michael Vick went to prison. He was, and, in many hearts, will forever be a dog fighter. However, most people don't know the extent of what he admitted to doing. They just know he fought dogs and wish we'd "forgive and forget." Would you forgive someone for drowning, electrocuting, or hanging a child? AN INNOCENT LIFE? NO! Why on earth are we supposed to suddenly forgive this man who has received national attention for brutally murdering innocent animals? Many argue that he "did his time." While many believe our judicial system failed miserably at assigning an appropriate amount of jail time, he did in fact, serve his sentence. However, he was immediately reinstated into the NFL and is back to making millions of dollars while the veterinarians, first responders, and sanctuaries caring for these physically and emotionally scarred animals are making far less and always will. While I and so many others believe a large portion of his earnings should be given to animal rescue groups across the country, there is a much larger problem. Michael Vick is not being prohibited from owning animals. While it is generally very difficult to regulate a life long prohibition such as this, the brutality of his actions and the spotlight of his career choice should make a difference. Regardless of the face he puts in front of cameras, only someone beyond repair would be able to commit these crimes. There is no rehabilitation for someone capable of these acts - especially someone who admitted to laughing at the animals' suffering. He was supposed to be an example. He was supposed to be a role model. If you believe this man does not deserve the love, respect, and loyalty of another animal so long as he lives, please sign this petition in hopes of keeping innocent animals out of his reach.
