Tagavi Does Not Meet The Quality That UKY Mechanical Engineering Students Demand.
Tagavi Does Not Meet The Quality That UKY Mechanical Engineering Students Demand.
The Issue
During my 5 years as a Mechanical Engineering Student at University of Kentucky I have experienced multiple Professors teaching qualities and methodologies. As most students experience through out their education, there will have some professors that go above and beyond and others that are not so great. During my 5 years as a Mechanical Engineering Student, I had Dr. Tagavi as a professor for Thermodynamics I and Heat Transfer. During those times that I had him he did not meet mine, and many others, lowest expectations. I am happy to say that I've passed his courses but, I am still unhappy to see my fellow Mechanical Engineering Comrades having to go through similar experiences as I had. Based on the current students that are taking his course I have already started hearing similar complaints that never got fixed; such as:
1) It's wrong to not tell us what the exams are weighted. (The syllabus is a contract. we need something to be able to argue our grades with come finals)
2) It's not okay to go over a word document in class and give us no materials/notes outside of class.
3) Complete lack of structure.
4) No course roadmap.
5) Him stating he doesn't want to be here.
These complaints I fear are only the beginning of complaints to come and these current Mechanical Engineering Students may soon discover that Dr. Tagavi's teaching abilities doesn't meet the quality that should be expected for a Mechanical Engineering Professor. During my time in his course I had to heavily rely on outside sources to get through his course and I do not wish for the current or future students to have to do the same. As students here at University of Kentucky we expect the time here at UKY to be spent well. The amount of money we spend to come to this college, the opportunity cost of not having a full time job, and the scholarships at risk should be highly considered among the decision makers of this campus. In most cases, I have seen University of Kentucky do an impeccable job with this however, it seems like the issue with one professor in particular, Dr. Tagavi, is not being attended too.
With this petition, and everyone that signs it, we ask for the issues above to be resolved, any issues in the future to be resolved (Within reasonable considerations), and for Dr. Tagavi to have someone set in on his lectures to evaluate his abilities as a professor and make a decision if the issues that are reoccurring can be fixed by coaching methods.
