Improve facilities/responsibilities for "stray" dogs by Police Scotland
The Issue
Buddies of Bandeath and the communities have been trying to stop the closure of Bandeath Dog Shelter. We have been trying to communicate with Police Scotland about there position about Bandeath.
During our campaign we have discovered the police have regularly said to the public "let the dog go" or "can you look after the dog". The public have to physically take a "stray" to the police station before they will do anything and will only attend if the dog is posing a "threat" of some kind.
A loose dog is always going to cause some kind of threat albeit running onto a road, being scared, being injured, etc, therefore causing some kind of accident.
We've found out that when a dog is then taken to the station the facilities are certainly not up to scratch.
Water logged kennels, wet blankets, dirty water, dirty bowls, not knowing where food is kept, the list is endless.
Police Scotland have a duty of care to the welfare of dogs and the public.
Ensure loose dogs are captured humanely (outwith dog warden hours), safe place to be kept, suitable conditions, fresh food/water, clean dry blankets, etc.
They have not/are not doing this and want to stop funding to one of the fewest non-kill shelters.
We need Police Scotland to understand the importance of these shelters and their duty of care to a frightened dog and then to provide a safe environment for the dog.
If not people's pets could get killed in an accident, get a disease from dirty facilities, etc.
Please sign so we can get a policy in place from the government and police Scotland to ensure the safety of "lost"
dogs and the "threat" a scared dog can pose on the public
