By Halloween 2020, release the 4K remaster of Michael Jackson's Thriller

The Issue

To the Estate of Michael Jackson,

In 2019, the quality of Michael Jackson's music videos, or "short films", as he preferred to call them, are unfortunately still in poor quality on YouTube. This is particularly disappointing knowing that Michael pioneered this genre with "Billie Jean", "Beat it" and "Thriller" in the early 80's and continued to innovate with hits such as "Smooth Criminal", "Black or White", "Remember the Time", "Scream", "Stranger in Moscow" and "Earth Song" in the latter part of his career. These are some of the greatest artistic achievements in this genre and it is unfortunate that we are unable to watch them as they deserve to be.

Music videos by Queen, Lionel Ritchie, Britney Spears, Lady Gaga and Janet Jackson are among hundreds that are being remastered and uploaded on YouTube. We know that a 4K remaster of Thriller exists and was shown in select theatres. Here is a side by side comparison. * A limited theatrical release can unfortunately only be enjoyed a minuscule amount of the population. On the other hand, a high definition release of an iconic film like Thriller will be enjoyed by millions and passed on to generations to come. Similar to how "Bohemian Rhapsody" caused a surge of interest in Queen's catalogue, I have no doubt that a HD release of Michael's short films will have a similar effect.

We know that Michael believed in the power of his art. He didn't charge any money when an artist wished to sample his music because he wanted his music to reach new audiences. His art reached every corner of the globe and has immortalized him. As "Thriller" is his best known short film and is synonymous with the spirit of Halloween, it is this short film that we, the fans of Michael Jackson and fans of music in general, urge the Estate to before Halloween 2020.

* The still for Thriller in 4K is taken from the Youtube trailer. I color corrected it slightly.
