To help Medfield, MA school bus drivers get paid during the statewide Covid-19 shutdown
The Issue
Fellow Medfield Residents: It has just come to our attention that the bus drivers for the Medfield School district have not received any payment or compensation since the last day of school on March 12, 2020. Technically the bus drivers are not employees of the school district, but instead are employees of the Michael J Connolly & Sons Bus company. The Medfield School District accounts for their salaries in the yearly school budget under Transportation Costs. Therefore, we have already paid for their salaries in our yearly property taxes and it would account for no additional hardship for the school district to ensure the bus drivers are paid.
I have spoken directly with Superintendent of Medfield Schools, Dr. Jeff Marsden, and he has told me that the district has been working hard to get the bus drivers paid, however the Michael J Connolly & Sons Bus Company is refusing to pay any and all bus drivers.
It is standard policy that the bus drivers are not paid for "snow" days (as the first 5 of these days are made up at the end of the school year) and also sick days. However, these are unprecedented times with at least 7 weeks of the schools being closed due to the Covid-19 pandemic State of Massachusetts mandate as issued by Governor Charlie Baker, and these wonderful people deserve to get paid their regular salaries, just like other employees of the Medfield School district.
Please consider signing and sharing this petition so we can help our neighbors who safely take care of and help our children each school day. Thank you.
