Miami University, recognizing the global pandemic crisis that is upon us, should understand that their first priority is to ensure the health and wellbeing of their students. Therefore, Miami should make coursework for all students pass or fail for the remainder of the semester.

We as Miami University students, having already moved to all-online coursework, should not have to endure the stress of getting good grades during this time of great uncertainty.

According to predictions of experts affiliated with the American Hospital Association, it is projected that 96 million people in the United States (roughly 30% of the total population) will be infected by COVID-19, with about 4.8 million needing hospitalization, and 480,000 people dying within an unspecified timeframe. Anyone is susceptible to contracting the virus. The US healthcare system is not prepared to handle a sudden influx of patients, and this will have a ripple effect across the economy, government, and many other facets of daily life. It is likely that we will not return to in-person classes at Miami this semester, given that social distancing is one of the main strategies to slow the spread of the virus.

Miami University and President Crawford must recognize the unprecedented burden placed on students as we try to navigate uncharted waters. Online classes and other methods of remote learning, while definitely doable, cannot ensure consistent across-the-board instruction for students who are learning a variety of different subjects. Students pay thousands of dollars to sit in classrooms to learn languages and computer software programs, participate in discussion seminars, collaborate on group projects, and most importantly, ask their professors questions when they don't understand a particular topic.

Online classes do not provide that same type of learning environment. There will be mass confusion and mishaps as professors and students try to adapt to teaching and learning in an online environment. Students who don't have continuous access to a computer or WiFi will be severely disadvantaged, as will those who require learning accommodations.

All in all, expecting students to be graded on their performance in online classes in a business-as-usual setting is simply unacceptable. The next few months are going to be harshly disruptive to everyone. We should not have to worry about our GPA's as well.
