Suspend Sorority Membership of for Racial Discrimination: AOII Miami U

The Issue

During the fall semester of the 2019-2020 school year at Miami University, Alpha Omicron Pi member expressed racial discrimination against an international student from India who wanted to informally rush AOII. Hackbarth was not supposed to be at this meeting but showed up anything to text a friend in a different sorority these discriminatory comments throughout the informal recruitment session, and she later told another member, of color, in AOII these comments. At the time, AOII Omega’s standards advisor suggested that the sorority keep Hackbarth, and help “change” her once Hackbarth explained her comments made towards the international student.

However, this is not the first time of racial discrimination Hackbarth has made towards this international student. During their freshman year (2018-2019), Hackbarth and a friend from another sorority made racial comments towards the international student. Hackbarth’s friend was this girl's roommate for a time, but later moved out because of this treatment.

The sorority’s current standards advisor, regional advisor, and standards chair created a plan "to help" and the international student, details unknown. This girl still feels uncomfortable around Hackbarth, especially since the international student accepted her bid to the sorority (despite this unacceptable behavior from). Another chapter of Alpha Omicron Pi has suspended membership for a girl saying the N-word, yet Miami’s chapter can’t suspend a member for directly discriminating against a PNM who later accepted her bid.

Several members of AOII Omega have reached out by email to the vice president of standards and chapter president in light of the BLM movement for racial justice for this international student. But those members have been silenced because the standards advisor had “a plan” in place for the spring semester. But due to COVID-19 and the quick departure from campus, that “plan” never got to happen. They have silenced members for directly calling Hackbarth out on social media because it makes the chapter look bad. The only reason the chapter looks bad is because they decided to keep a racist member in the chapter.

Please help the members who want change and action in this chapter and this international student get the justice she deserves.
