Extend Metro-Rail to Florida City

Extend Metro-Rail to Florida City

The Issue

Over the last 5 years, new-home construction has exponentially increased in southern Miami-Dade communities. With the increase in residential population comes a requisite demand for efficient public transportation. Currently, the Miami-Dade metro rail system ends at Dadeland station. This is completely ignoring the entire population south of Kendall Drive. US1 is constantly congested with commuter traffic due to lack of available public transportation options. We only have the metro bus system, which is not as efficient or streamlined as the metro-rail system.

A time estimate for an individual commuting on the metro bus from Homestead (US1 and Campbell Dr) to Dadeland South station is approxiately 2 hours for a 23 mile journey. Whereas traveling the same distance on the metrorail (from Dadeland South to the Palmetto Station) takes approximately 50 minutes -- based on themiamidade.gov transit schedule. The FL-821 Turnpike currenly holds 2 lanes from Exit 1 - Florida City to Exit 12 - Cutler Ridge Blvd. This dramatically extends transit time for commuters on the way to work.

An extension of the metro-rail to Florida City, will dramatically decrease transit time for residents south of Kendall Drive.  It will reduce the amount of congestion on US1, FL-821 Turnpike and Old Cutler Rd. This extension would also encourage business growth in Florida City, i.e. Prime Outlet Mall and local business and etc., due to easier access to these sites.

An extension to southern Miami-Dade is not only essential but damanded by your residents.
