At North Allegheny, hundreds of kids purchase lunch at school. NASD uses many single-use plastic items as well as styrofoam items to serve them. The amount of plastic that is used for one student’s lunch is unnecessary and it needs to stop. Plastic is used in milk jugs, water bottles, and containers that are used to serve vegetables, desserts, and many other items. Also, styrofoam trays are used in schools where they cannot wash the reusable trays or when they simply do not have enough of them to go around.

We are asking North Allegheny School District and Metz Culinary Management to do the following to provide a more sustainable environment for student’s futures:

  • Remove all styrofoam trays from the lunch room and replace it with more sustainable options (such as reusable or compostable trays).
  • Use more sustainable options to serve vegetables, desserts, etc. as opposed to single-use plastics.
  • Decrease plastic in all other ways possible that does not go against federal guidelines for school lunches.
