Remove the Sackler name from the Metropolitan Museum of Art

Remove the Sackler name from the Metropolitan Museum of Art

The Issue

The healthcare system has trapped millions of Americans in a cycle of addiction, targeting impoverished areas and blue collar communities. The Sacker family in particular is responsible for misinforming sales representatives, physicians, and patients about the safety of narcotic usage. Not only did they create and market a highly addictive pain medication known as Oxycontin to patients with minor ailments, they undermined federal and international drug regulations, paid off doctors and facilitated retreats and conferences with the goal of pushing sales. The Sackler family, as the owners of Purdue Pharma, were very publicly known for their "philanthropy", and were esteemed patrons of the arts; so much so that their name is emblazoned on various gallery plaques around the Metropolitan Museum of Art. While the Met is no longer accepting donations from the Sackler family, honoring any past contributions made by the Sacklers is a disgrace and a disservice to the estimated 2 million Americans who are battling opioid addiction. The Met has every reason follow in the footsteps of the Louvre and remove the Sackler name entirely from its walls.
