Provide Parking Passes to Downtown Workers - Nashville

The Issue

Workers, whether they be service staff, musicians, public employees, or office workers, in downtown Nashville are the ones who maintain the identity that fuels the gigantic tourism industry. Without us, the bars and restaurants would close, the music would stop.

Parking for downtown workers in Nashville has been a confusing, and expensive endeavor for years now.

Monthly and daily parking garage rates are only getting higher, and it's not feasible for many to feed the meters several times during their shifts. We are often forced to pay exorbitant fees at these garages, or run the risk of our cars being ticketed and/or towed, just so we can come downtown and do our jobs. I personally have had two separate occasions where I was ticketed before my meter had even run out, only to be told to "take it up with the court" by the parking enforcement officers writing said ticket. Downtown workers feel preyed upon by the parking magnates and metro parking enforcers, we are forced to spend significant amounts of our income made downtown just to commute there.

There was a short lived program through the Nashville Downtown Partnership that once allowed workers to get a free parking pass downtown. From what I can find online, that seems to have ceased to be. I have also stopped in at what was listed as their address, and was told that office doesn't exist. Now all I can find to back up that this program existed at all is an article from 2017. Now all we have is a parking lot across the pedestrian bridge, which may be feasible for some, but for others often means walking well over a mile, often in the cold or rain, to get to our jobs in a timely manner.

The solution could be as simple as an online portal that allows us to upload a copy of our pay stubs or other proof of employment downtown, and then being approved for a parking pass that can be either printed or mailed. This parking pass would ideally allow us to park at metered parking spots without issue.

Downtown workers should be able to go to their places of employment without having to worry about the cost of arriving there. We are what keeps the Nashville Identity alive.
