Concerned Student started this petition to Methacton School District and

Methacton School District is attempting to transition to a hybrid school model. All MSD families have been given the option for their student(s) to attend some in-person schooling. Or, for any families that are not comfortable with sending their child(ren) into the building, there is the option to continue school in a completely virtual setting. Although students were given the option to stay home, teachers were not granted the same luxury. Only select teachers, those with threatening conditions, are permitted to stay home. The remaining teachers - even those living with high-risk family members - are being forced to go into the building and interact with students (with no guarantee that these students are making any effort to stay safe).

As we progress into the winter months, it's forecasted that the number of COVID cases will continue to increase - as well as the flu making its seasonal appearance. Despite this, many students have taken careless liberties such as attending maskless parties and interacting with large social circles. Many people participating in these activities are planning to return to the school next marking period. If members of the MSD community cannot be respectful enough to make an effort to evade the virus for the sake of those returning to the building, then they should not be granted their wish to return to school at all.

Online education has been sufficient for learning and effective thus far to keep students and staff safe. Why is it necessary to mess with the system now, as the number of cases in Montgomery County and all over PA are rising? And if some Methacton families are so insistent upon their child coming back, why does it now matter if a teacher is insistent on staying home?

Expecting our educators to risk their own health, and their families' health without question, reflects poorly on those in charge of the district. The Methacton community needs to consider the wellbeing of all affected parties, and not rush to a haphazard hybrid plan that forces teachers to be subservient to the reckless will of some. Our teachers deserve a choice too.
