The Issue

We are writing to you as students at Walter Johnson High School. We would like to bring to your attention the case of Akram Nassir, a senior at our school, who was recently arrested for possessing a loaded 9 mm handgun on school property.

Akram is a bright and talented student who has been an exemplary student at school and a friend of many. He has shown incredible intelligence and dedication to his academics, taking 9 advanced placement classes, and a member of the APEX program. Despite his recent actions, we believe that Akram has the potential for change and betterment, and should not be defined by this mistake.

We would like to emphasize that Akram is a kind and caring individual who would never intentionally hurt anyone. Many of us looked up to him as a role model, and he was always willing to help his classmates. His dedication to his studies extended beyond the classroom, as he often tutored his peers in the rigorous AP courses that we took at WJ. Akram was also known for his  humor, calmness, and politeness.

We understand that what Akram did was wrong and that there are consequences for his actions. However, this was a misguided mistake, and made as a minor and not a reflection of his true character. Please consider supporting Akram in his case and advocating for a fair and just outcome, as we are running out of time and immediate action is crucial. Akram is currently being charged as an adult. Akram is only 17 years old. He just turned 17. We respectfully request that he be charged as a juvenile rather than an adult. This would allow him to receive the appropriate support and rehabilitation he needs to learn from this experience and become a productive member of society.

Thank you for your time and consideration.
