Brooke Birch started this petition to Mesa County Commissioners and

Living in a world where school and work can be shut down at any time by rising Covid cases, reliable internet access is essential to citizens.  Locally we are limited with internet providers.  Spectrum provides service for most of the valley but not for a small area west of 25 Road.  Grand Valley Telecommunications provides service but it's not reliable and residents pay a lot of money without the guarantee that the internet will work.  Currently Grand Valley Telecommunications offers satellites for customers that rely on a clear view of towers on the Uncompaghre Plateau.  If the wind blows, trees grow, or rain falls, the internet drops.  And Century Link? They tell us they can't provide anything because they don't have the infrastructure in place to make internet speeds worth having.

Residents here pay high property taxes.  With the Mill Levy passed for education, property and land owners saw a huge increase to their taxes.  Yet when schools shut down they didn't get any internet support.  The school district can provide jetpacks to students but they don't work in areas north of town.  In fact, most cell phones don't work without wi-fi to connect to it. Jetpacks work like a cell phone.  If there's no cell service, there is no internet from the jetpack.

Thus, when the world shuts down due to Covid, families in this community are left without reliable internet or telephone service.  This is unacceptable.

The solution: allow for competitors to enter the valley or have Spectrum and/or Century Link expand their infrastructure to make service possible.  The FCC rewards companies with grants when efforts are made to expand service to rural communities.  The FCC has already received a complaint against Spectrum for not providing service to all Mesa County residents.

Mesa County taxpayers deserve better. Mesa County students deserve better.  Mesa County residents working from home deserve better.
