Hi everyone,

I wanted to share a brief update on where things stand with the Revive Mitcham Eastfields petition and to thank you again for the strength and clarity of the feedback many of you have shared.

Because of the number of signatures and the detail in residents’ comments, the petition has now moved into formal engagement with decision-makers. Over the past week:

  • A detailed petition mandate briefing on rail services was shared with Dame Siobhain McDonagh MP and discussed directly with Network Rail. This has already led to Network Rail carrying out further assessment work around train frequency and level crossing performance.
  • I’ve met with Mitcham Common management and Friends of Mitcham Common, following the Leader of the Council writing on residents’ behalf, and formally recorded resident concerns around safety, lighting, bins, accessibility, dog control and future community use of the Common.
  • I’ve also had a constructive meeting with the Council’s Town Centre Manager to discuss issues many of you have raised around Mitcham town centre — including safety, accessibility, Majestic Way, shop mix, and how growth is being planned for.

Across all of these conversations, I’ve been very clear about what residents are actually asking for — including more predictable barrier times, safer and more accessible public space, and a town centre that works for everyone, including elderly and disabled residents. Many of your written comments fed directly into the briefings that have been shared.

At this stage, I’m being careful about how documents are shared publicly so that discussions with councillors, officers and partners stay constructive and don’t get shut down prematurely. That said, nothing is being said behind closed doors that I’m not willing to stand behind.

If you would like to read the petition mandate briefings that have been shared, you’re very welcome to email me directly at revivemitchameastfields@gmail.com and I can share them with you. I want residents to be able to see clearly how their concerns are being represented.

As soon as there are substantive responses back from the council or further updates from Network Rail, I’ll share those with you.

Thank you again — change only happens because people speak up, and this petition has already ensured Mitcham Eastfields is being taken seriously.

Ben
