Stop the Over-development of Twynyrodyn, Merthyr Tydfil

The Issue

The proposed housing development on the land between Dan Y Graig Estate and Keir Hardie Estate has now been submitted for planning permission to Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council. This is a large development for around 130 houses and will cover the majority of the land between the 2 estates.

A consultation was launched last year, however due to the pandemic and lock down restrictions, there was no opportunity for the community to be able to attend meetings to air their views on the development and there was a lack of communication to the residents of the area.

Such a large development will impact the whole area in a number of ways, including:-

 - Dust, noise and a large amount of disruption during the construction phase.
-  Loss of the green area which is popular with walkers and widely used for play & recreation by local children.
- Destruction of habitat which has a number of species of wildlife including feeding grounds for various species of bats.
- Increase of traffic in the immediate and surrounding area, in an area where traffic levels are already very high leading to extra pollution and posing extra safety risks and traffic congestion.
- Increase on pressure on local schools with the influx of extra children into the area.
- The small playground will be retained however will be surrounded by and closely overlooked by houses and roads posing increased risks to the health, safety and safeguarding of children.
- Risk of flooding due to high levels of ground water already in the area not being able to drain away.
