I just signed the following petition addressed to: Meridian Township Board of Trustees.
---------------- Save the Tuba Museum and historic Dr. Smiley house
These two culturally significant buildings in downtown Okemos should be preserved for future generations. The Tuba Museum building has been a landmark on the four corners of Okemos and Hamilton Road for 65 years, the last 30 as Travelers Club International Restaurant & Tuba Museum, which followed the Miller's Ice Cream Parlor that opened in 1959. Over one million meals have been served there to multiple generations and ice cream sodas are still made from the same soda fountain installed in 1959. It is the only Tuba Museum in the world.
The Dr. James Smiley house was built in 1870 and is on the Michigan Historic Register. It was the local doctor's office for nearly 100 years. Dr. Smiley was one of the first Meridian Township Supervisors, a Masonic leader and state legislator. This building can be moved to the Historic Village and restored if enough people sign the petition and join the fundraising effort. ----------------
