Mercy for Wesley

The Issue

Wesley Young is a devoted husband, caregiver, and a man who has already lost nearly two decades of his life to a wrongful conviction.

In 2019, after serving almost 18 years in prison, Wesley was released following serious concerns raised by prosecutors about the integrity of his case. Key witnesses recanted, there was no physical evidence, and officials within the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office determined the conviction could no longer be trusted. Rather than continue defending it, they approved his release.

When Wesley came home, he committed himself to rebuilding his life. When I was diagnosed with breast cancer, he became my caregiver through the most difficult period of our lives. He helped me through multiple surgeries, infections, and the devastating loss of our unborn child. He never left my side.

But Wesley’s past continues to follow him.

In 2023, under overwhelming financial and emotional pressure from my medical crisis, Wesley made a mistake that led to a federal charge. Because of his prior wrongful conviction — the same one prosecutors had already questioned — he was classified as a “Career Offender,” dramatically increasing his sentence.

Even as recently as 2024, prosecutors reaffirmed that Wesley and his co-defendants were innocent of the original shooting. Yet no action was taken to correct the record before his federal sentencing.

As a result, Wesley was sentenced to 23 years in federal prison — a sentence heavily driven by a conviction widely acknowledged as unreliable.

Wesley has already paid an extraordinary price for a conviction that should never have followed him. We are not asking that his mistake be ignored — we are asking that justice reflects the full truth of his story.

We respectfully ask President Donald Trump to grant clemency to Wesley Young so our family can have a second chance at rebuilding our life.
