IN PERSON GRADUATION, MERCY COLLEGE

The Issue

We, the class of 2021, request that our commencement ceremony be held in person. There are many methods to ensure that this event remain safe and enjoyable for all that will participate. Graduation is set to take place on May 19th, a date in which appropriate spring weather is forecasted. Using the weather to our advantage, the ceremony could justifiably take place outdoors while adhering to the 6 feet CDC guidelines utilizing Mercy’s field. To participate in the outdoor commencement ceremony, each student should be required to obtain a negative COVID test at least 48 hours before the commencement ceremony. Graduates will also be requested to complete a health questionnaire 24 hours before their set graduation date. When arriving for graduation, each student will have their temperature taken and information recorded for proper contact tracing. Use of masks will be mandatory throughout the ceremony, and no exceptions will be made to that obligation. Additionally, the ceremonies should be divided by school. While we recognize these steps will then require more time, planning and dedication than one ceremony day, the actions listed above will ensure that this momentous event remains safe for attendees.
The past year has been difficult, and the faculty, staff and graduates of 2021 deserve to be recognized for remaining dedicated throughout this unprecedented time. The class of 2021 has adapted, remained resilient and shown that they are Mercy Strong. We are confident that Mercy can match our same resolve that we learned here to manifest our request. Evidence that safe graduation ceremonies are possible can be seen happening throughout the country. Other colleges and universities that are much larger than Mercy College have been successful at allowing their students to participate in an in-person ceremony. Some of these colleges include Texas A&M University, The University of Tennesse, Sacred Heart University and Kean University. Furthermore, As of March 22nd, outdoor events such as graduation ceremonies can be held at a 200-person capacity in New York State. This number has grown from the initial 150-person capacity stated just a week ago when we received an email regarding graduation. Over the last week, New York State has seen a 17% decrease in COVID-19 cases from the average of two weeks ago, as stated by the New York Times. We feel the numbers will continue to decrease as more people will be eligible to receive the vaccine before our original graduation date.
Mercy College is a place that many call “home.” It has allowed many students to find their true passion while meeting lifelong friends along the way. An in-person graduation will prove that Mercy College is committed to doing its best for its students while caring about their safety. The dedication and time that goes into an in-person graduation at this time will speak volumes to current and past students and attract prospective students who are in search for a progressive, safe and invincible college. It exhibits that the college is going the extra mile, is committed to showcasing their student's dedication and hard work. Holding an in-person graduation will show people that it is possible to be safe while celebrating one of the most impactful and life-altering milestones we will ever experience.
