Mental health support for Adoptive parents

Mental health support for Adoptive parents
The Issue
I am one of many who have faced the challenges of adopting a child, only to find that the support system is lacking. I adopted a little boy, whose medical conditions and behavioral concerns were hidden from us. This lack of transparency, combined with the overwhelming responsibilities of adoption, took a significant toll on my mental health. Like many, I found the only way to get support was to report myself to safeguarding—a distressing and unnecessary step.
The adoption process needs urgent reform. Adoptive parents are bringing children into their homes, children who have experienced trauma and may have developmental delays. These parents need support, not judgment or barriers. It is essential that mental health support be made available to adoptive parents without stigma or unnecessary hurdles.
Statistics show that 60% of adopted children have experienced some form of neglect or trauma, and upwards of 30% face developmental challenges. Yet, the current system often leaves adoptive parents to navigate these issues alone, without proper resources or support.
Immediate, comprehensive mental health support and a transparent adoption process are crucial steps to revamping our adoption system. Adoptive parents must be fully informed and supported, ensuring they have the resources they need to provide the best care for their children.
Neurodivergent umbrella
Saying a child is Neurodivergent is not clear, honest or open - throughout the adoption process you are told to be open and honest, honesty is the best policy.
Yet they are allowed to hide serious, life long conditions behind the word Neurodivergent, and that is classed as them informing potential adopters of conditions.
That's why it is so important to sign the petition and fix a broken system.
This call for change is not just about improving the adoptive system; it's about ensuring the well-being of children and parents alike. I urge you to support this cause and help make mental health support a reality for adoptive parents. It's time for an open, honest, and supportive adoption process.
Please sign the petition to urge the government to introduce mental health support for adoptive parents. Together, we can reform a broken system and provide the necessary support for those who open their hearts and homes to children in need.
