Menstrual Product Accessibility on Principia Campus
Menstrual Product Accessibility on Principia Campus
The Issue
Menstruation is a natural process that people with uteruses go through for most of their lives, which is nearly half the population. Despite this, access to feminine products is not universally provided.
Here at Principia College, the College Store (also known as the C-store) sells menstrual products such as Tampax and Playsport. These products are often over priced, especially compared to stores such as Target or Walmart, which can be a barrier to access for low-income students. Without access to a vehicle or some way off campus, students are reliant on this store to support their hygienic needs. This is especially punitive to international students.
Free access to feminine hygiene products would create not only a sense of equity within the school, but would also positively impact many menstruators educational opportunities. Penalizing the menstruators on this campus by making them use money/points that could go towards their food and/or education creates an imbalance within the student body.
If our campus were able to provide free access to resources menstruators may need to manage their cycles without financial burden, people with uteruses on campus will feel more supported and have more equal opportunities. We urge the administration to take action in providing more accessible products to the student body.
