The Issue

Menstrual Hygiene For All is a petition by Aarav Seth (13) and Shreya Tuli (18) from India, co-founders of We Rise Together Foundation, to demand to add menstrual hygiene as a topic in the curriculum of all schools in India from 6th Grade onwards. We Rise Together Foundation is a non-governmental organization where youngsters work towards the betterment of society and the environment. Under one of our initiatives, i.e. She Hygiene, we've distributed over 4000 biodegradable sanitary pads to underprivileged women and also conducted awareness sessions, during the Covid-19 pandemic.

It has been found only 12% of menstruators in India use sanitary products. The rest 88% i.e., 355 million of the menstruating population are forced to use rags, cotton, old newspapers and other unhygienic alternatives. It has been found that 1 out of 5 schoolgirls drop out of school after they start menstruating, in India. Without proper menstrual hygiene, menstruators can become vulnerable to many period-related diseases like Urogenital infections, Fungal infections, Urinary Tract infections and even Cervical Cancer. This is preventing a huge female population from contributing to society in a better way.

Hence, we must demand the Honourable Prime Minister of India, Honourable President of India, Government of India, Ministry of Women and Child Welfare, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Tribal Affairs and all State Chief Ministers to pass a bill in the Parliament and the State Assemblies that mandates all schools into including menstrual hygiene as a topic in their syllabi from 6th Grade onwards. Special classes focusing specifically on this topic should also be brought into action in schools, educating both boys and girls. This would be a huge step towards preparing girls at the onset of puberty for their first period and also breaking down the taboo surrounding menstruation. All schools should also provide access to menstrual hygiene products at all times to resolve any emergencies.

We look forward to reaching 100,000 signatures on our petition. Help us accomplish this goal and create a new India free from the taboo surrounding menstruation.
