Thank you for taking part in our basic income survey as part of the Work and Pensions Select Committee’s consultation on the future of work.

In collaboration with Organise, over 20,000 of you shared your story of why we need a basic income in response to COVID19 and the ever changing world of work.

Key Findings

·   80% of respondents stated they think the government should introduce a universal basic income in the UK, with a further 19% stating a UBI should be introduced at least temporarily

·   58% stated that their income has decreased as a result of the coronavirus crisis

·   73% of respondents stated they do not believe their work will return to ‘normal’ after the coronavirus crisis has subsided.

·   74% of respondents reported feeling worried about their future at work.

·   95% of respondents said that receiving a basic income would allow them to feel more comfortable about re-entering education or training in a new skill to transition to the jobs of the future

·   93% of respondents said that receiving a basic income would  make them more likely to start their own business or project.

Basic Income Conversation have partnered with UBI Lab Network to create this interactive map that shows what people would do with a basic income across the country!

We were moved by some of the stories of what people would do - check them out for yourself!

Chris Stephens MP (SNP), a member of the Work and Pensions Select Committee, has welcomed your input saying “this is a very welcome step, and one which I know the Select Committee members will take seriously”
The Select Committee will now consider the evidence and in the coming weeks will produce a report of recommendations.

We will keep you updated on how this develops
In the meantime, we continue to put pressure on the government to adopt a basic income. The 20,000 responses strengthen the case for a Recovery Basic Income to be included in the Chancellor’s upcoming economic recovery plan.
