Remove the Lord Kitchener statue!
The Issue
In the recent event of Edward Colston statue being taken down by Black Lives Matter protestors, it is important that we look at all statues in our local areas to ensure we are not celebrating suffering and oppression.
Lord Kitchener was responsible for concentration camps during the Boer wars. His actions killed thousands.
Kitchener initiated plans to flush out guerrillas in a series of systematic drives, organised like a sporting shoot, with success defined by a weekly 'bag' of killed, captured and wounded, and sweep the country bare of everything that could give sustenance to the guerrillas, including women and children ... It was the clearance of civilians—uprooting a whole nation—that would come to dominate the last phase of the war.
It’s now time to remove this statue and replace it with some excellent local history that we are not short of. Perhaps Charles Dickens as he gave so much to the Medway towns heritage.
