The Issue

My son, Alteriq Pleasant, died tragically and unnecessarily in August 2022 due to a lack of immediate medical assistance during a medical emergency while detained by law enforcement. This personal tragedy highlights a significant gap in our healthcare and justice systems, demonstrating the immediate need to establish mandatory civil rights in healthcare for all Americans, regardless of their circumstances. He lay deceased for over three hours ten feet from the guard. Law enforcement officers are not licensed medical professionals, so they should not have or be put in a situation to determine someone’s medical needs. This would affect any American currently detained or in any capacity interacting with a law enforcement officer.

Our country must adapt to prevent future tragedies like the one that took my son from us. According to the National Research Council (2013), lower income individuals and those in custody are less likely to receive prompt, quality medical care compared to their counterparts. This socio-economic disparity in access to healthcare has led to unnecessary losses and immense suffering.

We are advocating for policy changes that ensure every American, regardless of their socioeconomic status or custodial situation, has access to prompt and quality healthcare. This includes ensuring law enforcement institutions are equipped with robust healthcare protocols that prevent unnecessary deaths like Alteriq's.

Your signature can help bring about this critical change. Let us honor Alteriq's memory by making sure that no mother has to lose ther loved one due to negligence. Sign our petition and support the establishment of mandatory civil rights in healthcare for all Americans. As of  June 2024 a law of this nature does not exist.

This new law would possibly affect 80 million Americans
