Increase Diversity in Medfield Public Schools with the METCO Program

The Issue

George Floyd's death has sparked the largest civil rights movement in world history. Much needed attention has been brought to systemic racism in our country and as more people mobilize to make change, we need to also keep in mind efforts to better our own smaller communities. Medfield, MA is a predominantly white and affluent suburb of Boston which many residents describe as a sort of "bubble" from the outside world. Recently, a Black Lives Matter protest took place in Medfield with a surprisingly large number of ~1,000 community members (total population is around 12,000). Still, while many residents of Medfield care about racial justice, our schools are extremely lacking in diversity. The Metropolitan Council for Educational Opportunity program is a voluntary integration program used in many neighboring towns to create a shared learning experience between students of color from Boston and students in suburban schools. Students participating in METCO are much more likely to graduate high school and pursue higher education than students in Boston Public Schools. The program would also raise more racial and cultural sensitivity among students in Medfield who are isolated from people who look different from themselves. Medfield is ranked as one of the best school districts in the state: but is a school with no diversity really that great?
