Mebane, North Carolina is a small community situated almost exactly halfway between the Triad and Triangle areas of the Piedmont region. Due to that proximity of the two larger metropolitan areas, it naturally became a trading area for local agriculture and small industry.

One of the main arteries near downtown is Stagecoach Road where, quite literally; stagecoaches once used as a stopping and load out point back in the 1800s. There still stands a massive rock with centuries of historical names carved into it from as far back as nearly 200 years. 

Now, due to a housing development approved for the area near the rock; a proposal has been submitted to destroy it in order to accommodate a road entrance to the development.

We, the citizens, residents, and caretakers of Mebane's history would like to see the rock not only preserved, but also designated as an official historic monument by the city, in perpetuity. There are so few historic monuments that stand the test of time, offend no one, and continue to provide a lens into history.
