The Issue

A recent Consumer Reports investigation into 41 powdered baby formulas has uncovered dangerous levels of arsenic in some products, sparking serious concerns about infant health.

Among the brands, which contained alarming levels of arsenic - beyond the daily limits - were popular PurAmino Hypoallergenic and Enfamil ProSobee Simply Plant-Based baby formula by Mead Johnson.

Arsenic is a toxic heavy metal that occurs naturally but is also classified as a human carcinogen. According to the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, arsenic is the most hazardous substance in the environment, with its inorganic form being especially dangerous for people of all ages.

Arsenic in high levels, of course, is a poison,” warns Mark R. Corkins, MD, professor of pediatrics at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis. “Over time, it increases your risk for certain cancers.”

Shortly after Consumer Reports presented its findings, the FDA launched Operation Stork Speed, an initiative aimed at improving the safety and quality of infant formula.

The Secretary of Health and Human Services, Robert F. Kennedy promised that “the FDA will use all resources and authorities at its disposal to make sure infant formula products are safe and wholesome for the families and children who rely on them.”

However as of today, the two above mentioned formulas from Mead Johnson are still on our shelves. This is completely unacceptable.

We demand that Mead Johnson immediately recall PurAmino Hypoallergenic and Enfamil ProSobee Simply Plant-Based formulas until they are proven to be free of harmful contaminants.
