Remove Osteoporosis Scientific Racism

The Issue

In my powerpoints for Anatomy and Physiology 141, Chapter 9, it says that white women are more likely to get osteoporosis than any other race. This simple little statement may seem pretty minor, but according to my research it could have major consequences. The basis of this statement is built on the belief that people of Black, Indigenous, or Hispanic descent have stronger bones, which is rooted in the scientific racism used to justify slavery, similar to “Black people have thicker skin” or “Black people feel pain differently.” While there have been studies that show most of the people recorded as having osteoporosis are White (cis women are biologically more likely to get it due to it being caused by estrogen-related problems), this is likely related to the issue that individuals of Indigenous, Black or Hispanic descent are less likely to be offered screenings for bone health (source Bone Health America, Race). Please, sign this petition because it’s possible to save the lives of many Black, Indigenous and Hispanic women from the system that abuses them.
