McGill University: Report All Current Affairs in Iran - Including Protests and Attacks
The Issue
This petition is a call for action from McGill University leadership and the greater McGill University community, including the media and student societies (e.g., McGill Reporter, McGill Tribune, PGSS, SSMU, etc.) to bring to light the atrocities committed by the security forces in Iran, the latest of which occurred on October 2nd, 2022, as the forces brutally attacked and arrested students who were peacefully protesting at Sharif University, one of the top universities in the country.
As you are certainly aware, anti-government protests erupted on September 17th, 2022, following the murder of Mahsa Amini at the hands of Iranian security forces, otherwise known as the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) for allegedly wearing her hijab incorrectly. These protests, mostly led by women and youth in Iran, have been met with brutal force and arrests. Hundreds of thousands of people across the globe marched in solidarity this past Saturday, October 1st, 2022, while the world news outlets stood and stared in nearly complete silence. Proving a powerful image of global support, the Iranian people have kept pushing and fighting for the very basic human rights we both hold so dear to the essence of our beings and take for granted.
On October 2nd, 2022, news broke that the Iranian police had cracked down on students at the prestigious Sharif University. Reports shared that the students were trapped in the parking lot where they were surrounded by security personnel who opened fire on these youth. We urge McGill University leadership and the greater McGill University community, including the media and student societies (e.g., McGill Reporter, McGill Tribune, PGSS, SSMU, etc.) to adequately cover the current affairs occurring in Iran, including the brutal acts against students on campuses across the country.
As one of the leading higher education institutions in Canada and the world, we believe it is your duty to share what is happening to the Iranian people in Iran, the country of so many of your students, staff, and faculty. McGill University owes it to itself, its students, and the community to be a beacon of action representing all those whose voices are left unheard, all those who constitute such a vibrant and impactful part of its academic community and beyond.
The Iranian diaspora strongly condemns the suppression of peaceful protests by the IRGC. We are calling for your solidarity in condemning the IRGC’s actions and for you to stand with the Iranian people fighting for their rights and freedom.
