Save the turtles, ban plastic straws.

The Issue

How many straws do you think get thrown away each day in the US alone. You probably guessed a lot. Well if you guessed 500 million, you are correct. All of these straws that get thrown away ends up in our oceans, the fish’s oceans, the marine lifes oceans, and on our beaches. Many people may say that they do not contribute to this pollution because they do not dump their plastic right into the ocean. But, those people are wrong, even though you might not dump your plastic straws directly into the ocean when your plastic gets to the landfill.  This constant dumping of plastic into our waterways is rapidly depleting the marine life in oceans. According to Ellen MacArthur, by the year 2050 there is expected to be more plastic than fish in the ocean. Plastic straws contain BPA (Bisphenol A), which is an industrial chemical that is colorless, and poorly soluble in water. When the fish are exposed to the toxins, they acquire them, then we eat the fish, taking in a much higher and stronger concentration of BPA via bio magnification. Aside from the dangers that this plastic poses to humans, the effects they have on aquatic life is detrimental. The straws are ingested by different species of sea life that then suffocate on the straws and killing the animals. Each year, fish in the North Pacific Ocean alone ingest 12,000 to 24,000 tons of plastic. That is a whole lot of plastic. If we continue to use plastic straws and throw them away, more and more marine life animals will come in with straws in their noses or other places. Please sign this petition and join our journey so we can get rid of plastic straws!
